From the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD)! The Department
offers academic and clinical preparation in the areas of language, speech, and hearing
science, American Sign Language, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology.
We pride ourselves on giving students the strongest possible preparation for careers in clinical service, teaching, and research. The excellence of our Audiology and Speech Pathology graduate programs are reflected in their strong national rankings (currently 12 and 45; U.S. News and World Report). CSD students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels have many opportunities to interact with faculty as they teach, conduct research, and provide clinical service.
CSD offers four degree programs, one minor, and one dual-degree program:
At the undergraduate level, we offer:
• The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with concentrations in Speech-Language-Hearing Science (LSH), Interpreter Training (ITT), and Deaf Studies (DST)
• A minor in American Sign Language (ASL)
At the graduate level, we offer:
• The Master of Science (M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology, including a residential program housed on the Tampa Campus, and the Suncoast distance learning program, offered to employees of the school system.
• The Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.)
• The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with concentrations in Hearing Science, Language & Speech Science, and Neurocommunicative Science
• The Au.D.-Ph.D.(dual-degree program)
We have a diverse faculty who conduct interdisciplinary and translational research
in several areas both within CSD and in related fields, including Medicine, Biomedical
Engineering, Aging, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Psychology. CSD has strong, established
relationships with many premier research and clinical facilities within USF and in
the surrounding community, such as USF Health Department of Neurology, USF Health
Department of Otolaryngology, USF Health Byrd Alzheimer's Institute, Moffitt Cancer
Center and Research Institute, James Haley Veterans' Hospital, and Bay Pines VA Healthcare
System. In addition, our faculty have collaborations with scientists at other institutions
around the country and across the globe.
Our faculty provides service to the university and community through the USF Speech-Language Clinic, USF Hearing Clinic, Bolesta Center at USF, and Hands On USF (a sign-language interpreting service). Through these enterprises, CSD provides the full range of pediatric and adult services in speech-language pathology, audiology, and interpreting.
Please contact us if we can assist you in any way. Our faculty and staff are available to answer questions regarding our academic and clinical programs, clinical service delivery, and giving opportunities. We also welcome visits to the department, clinics, and campus.
