Biography

Md Rabbi Alam is an assistant professor of instruction in the USF Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing. He joined the college in 2025 and teaches courses in cybersecurity, computer systems, and operating systems. He is also developing new offerings in malware analysis and adversarial modeling that emphasize real-world application and hands-on student engagement. Before pursuing his academic credentials, Alam worked as an engineer at Kona Software Labs Ltd, where he created mobile payment apps, worked on point-of-sale terminals, designed and developed authentication protocols, and integrated a payment platform with banking systems.

Research Interests

Alam’s research can be clustered into three key areas: Internet of Things security, cloud security, and machine learning. His IoT work investigates security vulnerabilities within IoT platforms and ecosystems, with a focus on designing and implementing advanced, scalable, and robust security frameworks to mitigate risks and safeguard interconnected devices. His research related to cloud security looks at novel attack surfaces in emerging cloud technologies, leveraging cutting-edge methodologies to develop innovative and effective security solutions for ensuring data integrity, confidentiality, and system resilience. Finally, he aims to create data-driven security mechanisms to help detect, prevent, and mitigate cyber threats, using sophisticated machine learning, generative AI, and natural language processing techniques to do so.

He was part of the research team that developed CryptMove, a novel technique for encrypted channel duplication and memory-based signature generation for stealthy cyberattacks. His work has been presented as conferences such as the ACM Conference on Data and Application Security and Privacy IEEE Secure Development Conference, and USENIX Security.

At USF, he plans to launch a security lab where students can explore the inner workings of attack and defense strategies—from advanced persistent threats to hardware-layer exploitation—and experiment with malware analysis frameworks and enterprise deception platforms.

Honors and Awards

Alam was GASP award at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in recognition of his academic performance there. He received Kona Software Labs “Rising Star” award when he worked in the industry.

Education

Alam earned a PhD in Computing and Informatics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, NC. He received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
