Daniel S. Powers, Associate Professor and founding member of the USF architecture faculty, teaches design studios and courses in professional practice. He initiated the School of Architecture & Community Design's study abroad programs, taking students to Spain in 1995, 1996 & 1998. In addition to his normal faculty duties, Dan has served as the school's Interim Dean & Associate Dean.

His primary research interests involve the influences of technology, cultural identity and interpretation, and social values on architectural design. He is currently writing a book about the sudden rise and fall of one of America's greatest industrial mining districts: Architecture of the Keweenaw: Communities & Buildings in Michigan's Copper Country. This "boom" took place from 1843 to the 1920s, when Michigan's Upper Peninsula was the only place on earth with pure, workable native copper. The structures built in these company-owned mining towns reflect the cultures, traditions, and customs of the nation's early immigrant miners. Although many buildings no longer exist, photographs and restorations provide an intriguing view of the region's unique history.

Powers received the Board of Regents State University System Teaching Incentive Award in 1994/95 and 1998/99, a Most Outstanding USF Professor Award in 1991/92 and a Most Outstanding Architecture Professor Award in 1990/1991.

As a practicing professional, he specialized in healthcare facilities. Dan has provided consultation services for a number of projects including the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and L'Hospital de L'Esperit Sant, in Barcelona, Spain. Powers earned his Bachelor of Architecture and his Master of Arts in Architecture at the University of Florida.
