USF Marks a Major Milestone in the Construction of New Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute

The University of South Florida is recognizing a significant milestone in the construction of the new USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute by holding a “topping-off” celebration. In construction, the topping-off is a traditional event held when the last beam is placed, marking the completion of a building’s structure. During the celebration, invited guests will sign a 20-foot long, 800-pound beam before a construction crew lifts it into the air and places it on top of the building.

Classmates William Maillis, 11, and John Beeman, 75, sit beside one another during a lecture in their Contemporary Thinking in Astronomy.

64 Years Apart and Learning Together as Bulls

When William Maillis walks in to his astronomy class, the University of South Florida undergraduate can’t help but stand out. At 11-years-old, he’s about a decade younger than a lot of his peers. His classmate, John Beeman, is equally as uncommon, but at 75, for the exact opposite reason. More than 60 years separate the two students and while they come from very different places and are working toward very different goals, they’re both part of the boundless community that makes USF an extraordinary place to learn, work, live and grow.
