Vita

Tim Smith is an associate professor of instruction in the School of Information Systems at the University of South Florida. He joined USF in 2022 after serving as an teaching professor in the Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University.

Smith’s teaching and research focus on artificial intelligence, business analytics, information systems, and the organizational implications of emerging technologies. He has worked extensively with artificial intelligence for several years, with particular interests in generative AI, large language models, agentic systems, machine learning, AI-enabled organizational change, and the effective integration of AI into business and higher education. His teaching spans Python programming, machine learning, text analytics, generative AI, big data technologies, and enterprise systems development.

In recognition of his leadership in artificial intelligence education and curriculum innovation, Smith was appointed an inaugural School of Information Systems AI Fellow for the 2026–2027 academic year. In this role, he contributes to the school’s efforts to advance AI-related curricula, educational innovation, industry engagement, and faculty collaboration.

Smith’s scholarship spans artificial intelligence and machine learning, information systems education, technology adoption, organizational routines, health information technology, blockchain education, and cybersecurity. His work has appeared in academic journals including Communications of the Association for Information Systems, the Journal of Information Systems Education, Trends in Higher Education, and Teaching Mathematics and Computer Science. He has also presented his research at conferences including the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, the Americas Conference on Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Systems, and the International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology. Smith received the Best Paper Award at the 2018 Workshop on the Adoption and Diffusion of Information Technology and currently serves as technical editor for the Journal of Information Systems Education.

Before entering academia, Smith accumulated more than 20 years of industry experience. His background includes founding and leading a software development company, co-developing an operating system, and serving in engineering and executive leadership roles in the telecommunications industry. This experience informs his applied approach to teaching, research, and industry collaboration.

Smith earned a PhD from Carleton University, a master’s degree from Athabasca University, and a bachelor’s degree in economics with first-class honors from the University of New Brunswick.
