Aging Studies doctoral student earns national spotlight, leads new GSA student chapter

Layla Santana, a doctoral student in the School of Aging Studies, was recently featured in the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Member Spotlight of the Month.

The feature includes a Q&A highlighting her journey as a researcher, her experience at USF, and how being part of an inspiring academic community has shaped her career. Santana will present her research at the upcoming GSA Annual Scientific Meeting, taking place Nov. 12–15.

Santana was also recently elected president of the newly formed GSA Student Chapter at USF — the university’s first official chapter of the national organization. Joining her on the leadership team are Chirantana Dayanandaswamy Rekha, doctoral student (vice president); Girish Gobind Hemrajani, doctoral student (treasurer); and Hongdao Meng, MD, PhD, MPH, professor in the School of Aging Studies (faculty advisor).

The chapter’s mission is to promote student research, strengthen networking opportunities, and elevate the research community within the School of Aging Studies. The team is eager to launch new initiatives, beginning at this year’s GSA Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston.
