From Oct. 23-25, 17 students in the ASL Interpreting program traveled to Washington, D.C., to visit Gallaudet University — the first and only university in the United States for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

The trip provided a valuable opportunity for the students to immerse themselves in Deaf culture, interact directly with Deaf college students, and gain a deeper understanding of the Deaf community.

Gallaudet players and USF students

USF students met Gallaudet University volleyball players.

During their visit, students ordered meals using American Sign Language (ASL) at the Deaf Starbucks, attended a mini-workshop led by a Gallaudet University professor, and participated in a campus tour. They also met Gallaudet University volleyball players and coaches and explored the National Mall.

The highlight of the trip was attending the pep rally and homecoming, where they experienced the vibrant Deaf community spirit while enjoying the many booths, festivities, and athletic events on campus. They attended both a volleyball and football games, engaging with Deaf attendees and Gallaudet University alumni throughout the weekend.

The trip was an enriching experience that offered students a firsthand look into the heart of Deaf culture and education.
