Physical Security

Cameras, Alarms, and General Security

The University of South Florida is committed to enhancing the safety of our campus community through the integration of a variety of physical security measures.

One essential component of our comprehensive security plan is the utilization of video surveillance cameras.  Cameras are not a guarantee of safety; however, they do serve as deterrents and record images for future identification of individuals and activity in the event of violations of law or university policy.

USF surveillance cameras are not monitored continuously under normal operating conditions but may be monitored for legitimate safety and security purposes that include, but are not limited to, the following: life safety situations, high risk areas, restricted access areas/locations, in response to an alarm, special events, and active criminal activity.

The University of South Florida Division of Public Safety reserves the right to place video surveillance cameras where necessary and appropriate.  The University of South Florida utilizes the Genetec Security Center platform to manage security cameras.  Video images are centrally managed and maintained for thirty (30) days.

Remember that cameras support security, they don’t replace action!  Report any concerning activity and don’t simply assume a camera will capture it.
