BIOGRAPHY
Tianen Chen (PhD, Cornell University) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of South Florida. Dr. Chen’s research explores how strategic health communication can promote the well-being of marginalized populations, with a particular focus on racial and sexual minorities. His recent work examines the roles of social support, interpersonal conversations, and identity-related factors in shaping responses to persuasive health messages in the contexts of HIV prevention, HPV prevention, cancer screening, and mental health. Dr. Chen’s research has been published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, Health Communication, Sex Roles, and other journals. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Cancer Institute. He employs mixed-methods and audience-centered approaches to inform the design and delivery of health interventions. His teaching interests include health communication, persuasion, media effects, and communication research methods.
