Accounting Major

The Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy prepares undergraduates for a variety of career options under the accounting umbrella, including auditing, tax, forensics, business consulting, and corporate compliance. Students are immersed in a high-quality, diverse learning environment that focuses on innovation and critical thinking skills, which prepares them to impact not only the accounting profession but also the greater community.

Through additional coursework, accounting graduates are eligible to sit for several different professional certification exams, notably the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. See the Certifying for Success page for more information.

In addition, accounting majors are prepared to enter the Master of Accountancy (MAcc). Further study at the graduate level not only enables students to continue developing knowledge and skills, but also positions them to become leaders in the profession.

Requirements for the Major

In addition to university degree and business core requirements, students must complete 24 credit hours in accounting courses.

Accounting Electives (6 credit hours)

Accounting electives can be selected from 4000- and 5000-level classes that have ACG and TAX prefixes.

Careers in Accounting

Career options in the accounting profession include auditing, tax, forensics, business consulting, and corporate compliance. Currently the demand for accounting graduates to fill these positions is high: 48% of the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy graduates responded that they had obtained full-time accounting positions within 3 months of graduation in a 2016-17 graduation survey.
