Safety Campaign
Introduction
Join us as we kick off our year long safety campaign
Emergency Communication
When an emergency happens, the first thing people typically want is accurate and up-to-date information. I would like to use this month's installment of my safety campaign newsletter to speak briefly about communication within the University during such times.
Crime Stats and Prevention
How many of us are aware of the types of crimes happening in our immediate vicinity? This month we'll examine the nature of crime occurring around the college over the last year, as well as preventative measures for reducing their occurrence in the future. University Police provided crime data from January 1, 2013 to February 17, 2014 for the areas of campus outlined on this map. These zones were chosen since they represent the immediate surround
Active Shooter
Unfortunately, over the past 15 years, a new phrase has become engrained in our vocabulary, "active shooter". Today, I'd like to direct your attention to a resource provided by the University that can assist with our preparations for the unthinkable.
Safety Assessment
On January 21st, 2014, representatives from our College, as well as the University Police, Physical Plant and Environmental Health and Safety conducted a night time security assessment of the MHC and MHA buildings. The aim of this assessment was to identify and address gaps in the building security. I would like to tell you about some of the findings of this assessment.
Hurricane Season
Floridians are well aware June 1st marks the official start of the hurricane season. The Tampa Bay area has been fortunate to avoid a direct hit or even near miss over the last several years. Regardless, we must always remember to be prepared and vigilant during this season as storms can develop quickly. Over the past few years we have welcomed faculty and staff from across the United States to join our college. Many of you might not be as aware
Know Your Environment
Emergencies require us to act almost instinctively in order to avert disaster. Knowing the safety features in your environment can be helpful in reducing the time to acquire assistance. This month, I want to highlight a few items that could be vital for you to know in the event of an on-campus emergency.
Dealing with Disruptive Students
As we look forward to a new academic year, I would like to use this month's newsletter to address safety when dealing with disruptive students. While instances of these are rare, we should still familiarize ourselves with the types of disruption that students can pose along with the appropriate methods for addressing them.
Fire Safety
Those of us in the MHC building have been plagued this past year with fire alarms! So, I'd like to kick off the new academic year by talking about protocols and procedures for fire alarms along with fire safety in general.
Cyber Security
Some of you may be aware that October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. During this month, USF IT will provide daily cyber safety tips on their website. I would also like to share with you some cyber security tips to help make your online forays a little safer.
