What are Evidence-Based Practices?

According to SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP), an evidence-based practice is a practice that is based on rigorous research and has demonstrated effectiveness in achieving the outcomes that it is designated to achieve.

The Florida Department of Children and Families 2016 Criminal Justice, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Reinvestment Grant RFA provides additional insight into evidence-based and promising practices:

  • Some examples of evidence-based programs are Assertive Community Treatment, Supported Employment, Modified Therapeutic Community, and Permanent Supportive Housing.
  • Some examples of evidence-based practices are Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
  • Some examples of promising programs are Forensic ACT, Forensic Intensive Case Management, 12-Step, or Peer-Based Recovery Support.
  • Some examples of promising practices are Cognitive Behavioral Treatment targeting criminogenic risks, Forensic Peer Specialists, Wraparound, and Contingency Management.
