Required Courses

Human Resource Management Introduction

This overview of the role of human resource management in successful organizations is designed for newcomers to the field and for professionals who wish to review the fundamentals. It presents a brief historical perspective of personnel management and identifies and discusses the components of the HR management function.

Human Resources Law (HR Law)

This class is an introduction to the multitude of laws surrounding HR and the workplace. It will provide a plethora of information on the legal aspects, as well as how to apply what you learn. Resources will be plenty in this class which will give you the knowledge to make day to day decisions which impact your bottom line and your reputation as an HR professional or a business owner. This class does not replace an attorney's expertise. It will provide you with the basics and the knowledge to know what questions to ask an attorney. The class will be in the form of a lecture, in addition to some practical lab work where students will determine the outcome of real HR situations.

Compensation Design and Administration

Issues in compensation design and administration center on four areas:

  • external events (labor market, government legislation)
  • strategy issues in integrating compensation plans with organization and human resource planning
  • pay system mechanics and assignment of value to jobs in the organization and processes of administration (secrecy versus openness, participation in pay system design and administration)

In this course, you will review the tools and techniques for designing, implementing, and administering legal wage and salary programs. You will also look at the effects of compensation on motivation and performance, determining salary increase budgets, comparable worth and EEO issues, labor market surveys, and establishing the pay-performance linkage.

Employee Relations and Equal Employment Opportunity

The basic premise of federal anti discrimination legislation is that all employment decisions - including hiring, compensation, training, discipline and firing - should be job-related and based upon the needs of the business. Thorough knowledge of the laws that govern equal treatment in all employment-related actions is essential for all those who handle human resources responsibilities. This course focuses on the genesis of equal employment opportunity laws, including Title VII, ADEA, ADA, ADAAA, and others.

The development and evaluation of human resource policies and procedures for compliance and effectiveness, the philosophy of affirmative action and diversity programs, and the assessment of legal issues affecting employee relations will be discussed, along with employer's rights and obligations.

Recruitment, Selection and Placement

Recruitment, Selection and Placement
This course covers the organizational and behavioral issues associated with attracting employees, predicting future performance of recruits, selecting qualified individuals, matching recruits to positions, and developing effective policies and procedures to guide the process.
