Applying For Aid

IRS Data Retrieval Tool

The IRS DRT allows you to download your (and parents, if a dependent student) tax information from your completed tax returns directly into your FAFSA. The DRT speeds up the processing of your FAFSA, and if you are selected for verification, you will not have to provide paper copies of tax documents.

If you are selected for verification for the 2023-2024 FAFSA, you must use the IRS DRT to retrieve the 2021 tax data for you and your parents, if a dependent student.

How Do I Use the DRT?

  1. Go to https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa;
  2. Click ‘Login’ and enter your FSA ID and password
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to transfer your tax data to your FAFSA

If you are unable to use the DRT and are required to submit tax return transcripts, you may request them online through the IRS 'Get Transcript Online' option. Instructions for requesting a copy of tax transcripts can be found here.
