Senior Food as Medicine (FaM) Program

The Center for the Advancement of Food Security and Healthy Communities (CAFSHC) will conduct an evaluation of the Senior Food as Medicine (FaM) Program that Feeding Tampa Bay (FTB) will implement in Pinellas County in Fall 2023. The goal of the project is to compare the efficacy of the FaM program among participants who receive services through a community-based organization with those who receive those services in a clinical setting.

As part of the evaluation, CAFSHC will carry out the following activities in which students may be involved:

  • Apply for IRB clearance
  • Create and translate evaluation instruments
  • Conduct systematic observations at a community-based organization that provides services to older adults and at a medical clinic that caters to this population in Pinellas County.
  • Collect pre- and post-test data on food security, self-reported health status, social support, etc. with a sample of approximately 75 FaM program participants.
  • Conduct individual interviews with 20 FaM program participants (10 from each site) to assess their perceptions of the program as well as their recommendations for future programming
  • Conduct individual interviews with service providers from each location (Number to be determined)
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data
  • Prepare a final report and final presentation for FTB and other stakeholders
