Discourse and Cognition Study
Brain injury affects cognitive functions and often leads to decreased social functioning. This study seeks to understand how cognitive and psychosocial factors influence communication skills following brain injury such as stroke (with and without aphasia), and traumatic brain injury.
Language Recovery in Stroke
Aphasia can have long-term, lasting effects on persons’ daily life. The goal of this study is to better understand how to maximize stroke recovery and improve quality of life. In this study we focus on individuals with recent stroke (< 6 months after onset).
Brain Imaging Study
Language comprehension is critical to nearly all communicative interactions and relies on complex neural circuits. We aim to identify brain regions recruited for processing language comprehension in adults with acquired neurogenic disorders using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS).
fNIRS
fNIRS is an non-invasive, safe neuroimaging technique that uses light to detect neural activity based on changes in cerebral blood flow. We recruit adults with and without stoke/aphasia (older than 18 years-old).
