David C. Anchin Center Empowers New Math Educators with Three-Part Series

The David C. Anchin Center for the Advancement of Teaching recently concluded an enriching three-part series tailored for new and alternatively certified teachers in secondary mathematics. Hosted by the esteemed educator Ms. Deb Costello, boasting 36 years of experience in teaching mathematics from grades 6 to 12, the sessions provided a platform for emerging educators to delve into the nuances of effective teaching practices and curriculum development.

The series, titled "New Horizons in the Secondary Math Classroom: A Professional Learning Network for New and Alternatively-Certified Secondary Math Teachers," offered a comprehensive exploration of key aspects essential for fostering student success in mathematics.

The first session, "Building Foundation," kicked off on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Attendees were treated to insights on the art of teaching and the fundamental elements that define exceptional educators. Strategies for cultivating robust student-teacher relationships and an introduction to educational neuroscience set the stage for a holistic approach to teaching mathematics.

Following the foundational session, participants reconvened on Saturday, February 10, 2024, for "Curriculum Craftsmanship." Led by Ms. Costello, educators delved into the intricacies of curriculum design tailored specifically for secondary math. Pedagogical techniques aimed at infusing vitality into mathematics instruction were shared, along with an opportunity to exchange valuable curriculum resources.

The series culminated in the third session, "Innovate and Engage," on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Attendees were invigorated with strategies to energize their classrooms through interactive engagement techniques. Emphasis was placed on fostering critical thinking skills through active learning methods, coupled with harnessing technology tools to enhance math lessons for the modern learner.
