Reading in Motion

A Pilot Study of a Games and Movement-Based Intervention for Struggling First Grade Readers. This study develops a new Tier II reading intervention for struggling first grade readers. Titled Reading in Motion, the intervention is focused on developing early reading skills by using games and movement to accompany a basal reader and a computer-based reading program. The study is a collaboration of Linda Raffaele Mendez Ph.D. (Department of Psychological and Social Foundations, University of South Florida) and Catherine Pelzmann M.Ed. (Proprietor, Advantage Tutoring).

The intervention, which is based on the teaching methods developed by Ms. Pelzmann, was delivered to 10 struggling first grade readers by trained graduate students in the USF School Psychology department and one certified teacher during summer 2011. The program involves lessons from a basal reader and word study games designed to accompany the basal reader as well as computer-based reading activities (i.e., Reader Rabbit Interactive Reading Journey 1). Another important aspect of the program is parent involvement; parents play games with their children and read with them from the basal in the evening. The program is a pilot study.
