Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) – Preparing AP™ Teachers Globally
The Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI), is a College Board endorsed program that provides professional development to AP teachers. Through the Advanced Placement™ program, College Board provides a way for high school students to earn free college credits while taking high school courses. Taking Advanced Placement courses exposes students to college level coursework and begins preparing them to think more critically.
The Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) provides teachers the opportunity to learn how to teach their course from College Board-approved consultants. These consultants are experts in their subject areas and work with College Board as AP Readers, Graders, and Table Leaders. Not only is this an opportunity to learn directly from College Board experts, but also from other instructors from all over the world! This 4 day intensive training is designed to enhance the AP teacher's skills, ability, and knowledge of their subject regardless of their experience level.
In 2017 the USF Tampa APSI was given a 360 degree makeover under the direction of its new leadership. Dr. Stacy Hahn, Director of Professional Development & Partnerships and Associate Director of the Anchin Center, took on the role of Director of APSI. In February after months of searching, Yashira Cabrera was brought on as the program Coordinator. Together they redesigned the APSI experience for consultants, USF colleagues, and participants alike.
With over 10 years of operations and management experience in a wide range of industries, Yashira has compiled extensive experience with a strong focus on customer service, organizational efficiency and strategic implementation. This strong foundation proved to be just what APSI needed by leading the program to see the highest registration and attendance rate it had seen in over 3 years. There were 760 participants, an increase of almost 10% from last year alone. Participants came from all over the United States as well as the Bahamas, Ecuador, Germany, Japan, and United Kingdom. Making USF Tampa APSI a Global Institute. In 2018, they saw even larger success with the expansion into 5 new subjects: Chinese Language & Culture, French Language & Culture, Macroeconomics, Comparative Government & Politics. More than 860 teachers attended the institute.
Andrew Nelson, a Department of Defense Chemistry teacher in Germany shared with us that last year he decided he wanted to live life to the fullest and this summer he set out on a cross country road trip to visit 28 National Parks in 6 weeks! He arrived in the states in June and reach his goal just in time to arrive to arrive for his first day.
