Dr. Labrador pioneers the first ever NSF-funded overseas summer REU program

This year, Dr. Miguel Labrador's summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program will take place in the city of Oviedo, Spain. The National Science Foundation gave Dr. Labrador funding to experiment with a new initiative: Combining a Research Experiences for Undergraduates with a Study Abroad program. It is worth mentioning that the National Science Foundation has been emphasizing the need for undergraduate students to have an REU and Study Abroad experiences before they graduate; however, so far these experiences have offered in a completely separate manner.

Dr. Labrador's idea is to offer participating students the benefits of both programs at the same time saving costs
and allowing more students to have both experiences. It will go further than that allowing the students to interact with the faculty of the University of Oviedo in their research projects, providing them with the experience of working in a foreign environment and thus preparing them for the global economy. In addition to the research projects in the area of ubiquitous sensing, the program includes a course on Spanish culture and many cultural activities in the area of Asturias and central Spain. As in any other REU program, NSF provides funds to cover the costs of transportation and accommodations as well as stipends.
