Welcome to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of South Florida! We are excited to announce an important milestone for our program: beginning this Fall semester, our department will officially transition from Electrical Engineering to Electrical and Computer Engineering, alongside the launch of new Computer Engineering programs. This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our community, and we look forward to sharing many more developments as our programs continue to expand and evolve.

This evolution reflects the increasing convergence of electronics, computing, and intelligent systems that power today’s technology-driven world. By expanding into ECE, the department builds on its long-standing excellence in electrical engineering while creating new opportunities in computer engineering, including computer architecture, hardware systems, embedded and cyber-physical systems, hardware security, AI hardware, and next-generation computing platforms.

Our program continues to be led by 28 outstanding faculty members, internationally recognized scholars that include NSF CAREER awardees, Fellows of IEEE and AAAS, and Distinguished University Professors. Their research spans wireless and computer networks, smart grids and renewable energy integration, sensing and imaging systems, AI-enabled devices, robotics, and advanced electronic and photonic technologies. Both undergraduate and graduate students actively engage in these research efforts through collaborative projects, internships, and hands-on research programs.

Our outstanding student body plays a central role in shaping the dynamic spirit of the department. Through organizations such as IEEE, HKN, IEEE PES, IEEE EDS, and the Ham Radio Club, they lead a vibrant community of technical and professional activities. Each semester they organize industry forums, expert panels, workshops, competitions, and networking events that bring leaders from industry directly to campus. These experiences give students the opportunity to connect with professionals, explore emerging technologies in areas such as power, wireless systems, nanoelectronics, automation, and robotics, and develop the leadership and teamwork skills that define successful engineers.

The impact of this experience is reflected in the success of our graduates. Our alumni go on to exciting careers at companies such as Qualcomm, SpaceX, GE Aerospace, Jabil, Raytheon, Texas Instruments, TECO, Stryker, Duke Energy, and Lockheed Martin, among many others. They design advanced chips, build next-generation communication systems, power the electric grid, develop autonomous technologies, and help launch missions into space. If you are passionate about building the technologies that will shape the future and major in one of the two most valuable majors (according to Bankrate.com) there is no better place to start than here at USF ECE.
