The Next Physician and Health Care Professional

Pre-College Summer program students examining a dummy for their Physician and Healthcare Professional course.

The program has reached space capacity. Please check back in Fall 2021 for Summer 2022 program information.

Program Description

Natural science is the basis for many applied disciplines including medicine and public health. In this course, students work on real-world problems such as drug resistant bacteria, accessibility of health care, and population health. These problems are evaluated using UN’s Sustainable Development goals and addressed through Community Engaged Learning by directly working with local businesses, organizations, and partners. Regardless of major, you will gain from the methods, practice, and culture of scientific research. This includes literature review, experimental design, and presentation skills required for success in interdisciplinary science research. In addition, you will identify potential research opportunities by meeting with professionals and researchers in your area of interest.

Program Objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge of evidence, ideas & models scientists use to make evaluations about the natural world. Analyze how the ideas and models of the natural sciences relate to societal issues.
  • Present a professional identity that effectively communicates evidenced-based solutions to a broad audience. Integrate knowledge of the innovation, creativity, design, and reflection process to develop a proposal to a real-world problem.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills by interacting directly with potential customers, clients, or stakeholders.
  • Utilize creativity and innovation to develop a proposal to address a real-world problem.
