First-Generation Bulls

What is First-Gen?

Here at USF, we define a first-generation (first-gen) student as a student whose parents or guardians did not complete a bachelor's degree.

However, there is no universal definition of a first-generation student. Students may also consider themselves as as first-gen if:

  • They will be the first in their immediate family to graduate from a four-year college
  • Their primary caregiver(s) that did not graduate from a four-year college in the U.S.
  • Their primary caregiver(s) completed their degrees when over the age of 25
  • Their primary caregiver(s) earned a degree as a non-traditional student

USF's First-Generation Student Success initiatives embrace all these definitions to reach as many students as possible and help however we can!

First-Gen Student Success, located in the Office of Undergraduate Studies, supports first-gen students by connecting them to helpful programs, essential resources, engaging events, and more.

Our mission is to partner with students as they navigate the transition into college life, offering guidance and support throughout this exciting journey. With so many offices, organizations, and events available at the university, it’s completely natural to feel uncertain about where to begin or how to find the right resources. This team works alongside students to help them make sense of it all—connecting them with the tools, people, and opportunities that can make a real difference. Asking questions and reaching out for support is a smart and expected part of the college experience.
