BIO

Melanie Escue is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of South Florida. Her interdisciplinary research background, in both sociology and criminology, addresses issues of social inequality and injustices. She has explored pressing social issues including the well-being and adaptation of (im)migrants, racial and ethnic disparities in sentencing decisions, and the criminalization of sexual minorities. Her work has been published in Social Science Research, Justice Quarterly, Sexual Abuse, Sociological Focus, and Psychology, Crime, and Law. Currently, her work explores 1) how the changing political landscape, and particularly legal status, shapes the experiences and well-being of undocumented young adults living in Florida and 2) the adaptation and emotional well-being of Puerto Rican post-disaster migrants in the United States. Moreover, she is committed to community engaged learning, research, and service that strives to support marginalized communities.
