Tampa Emancipation Day Celebration

Tampa Emancipation Day Celebration

In collaboration with the USF Racial Justice Initiative and Tampa Bay Housing Authority (COMMA),  The Tampa Bay History Center will honor the perseverance and accomplishments of Tampa’s Black Pioneers. ON MAY 6TH, Tampa will be celebrating its Emancipation day on May 6, 1864. The event theme, "Jazz in the Garden," will feature local musicians and a recognition ceremony for some of Florida's legacy black businesses, as well as a catered meal. It is an event you don't want to miss. Join US in celebrating this momentous day in Tampa's Black History and reconnect with the community roots while making new memories.

Participants will also hear from Dr. Tomaro Taylor director of USF Special Collections about the university's archival material related to the African American experience and will learn how to register for a free workshop on May 25, 2024. Workshop attendees will gain familiarity with what kinds of research material are available at USF and how Tampa's community members can access them.
