BIO

Dr. Roxanne Watson is an Associate Professor in the School of Mass Communications. She teaches courses in the journalism sequence and in communications law at the graduate and undergraduate levels.  Watson completed her Ph.D. in Mass Communications at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla., her M.A. in Journalism from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla. An attorney-at-law, she received her LLB from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados and legal professional accreditation from the Norman Manley Law School, Jamaica. She also has B.A. in History and Social Sciences from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica.

Watson was a reporter with the Gleaner, Jamaica’s oldest newspaper, and worked for three years in public relations, variously in the public and private sectors. She practiced law for four years privately and as a prosecutor. Watson’s research focuses on journalism history and law, comparing developments in the Caribbean, U.S. and other countries in areas ranging from criminal and civil libel to regulation of the broadcast media.
