Costume Shop Operational Safety Guidelines

General Information:

Initial classes held in the Costume Shop are given General Safety Procedures, to include the following categories:

Chemical and Hazardous Materials:

  • Material Safety Data Sheets: Information concerning proper use and protection of chemicals used in the Costume Shop to include treatment to exposure is located centrally in the Costume Shop.  Students are provided access to this file along with information for an on-line website for all MSDS. 
  • Disposal of any hazardous waste is determined when applicable.
  • Location of Fire Extinguishers and Flammable Fire Cabinet locations are reviewed.

Electrical:

  • Guidelines for electrical panel clearance are reviewed. Sign is posted to keep area clear.
  • Procedures for turning off electric equipment used when closing the shop are reviewed and assigned.

Training on Industrial Equipment:

  • Operation of Industrial Sewing Machines must be trained by a shop supervisor and documented with date and time and signature.
  • Training for operation of Industrial Irons is completed the first week of classes.

Safety Equipment:

  • Location of safety equipment and protective gear is reviewed during “Safety Procedures” the first class.
  • Exhaust fan location and purpose is reviewed during “Safety Procedures” the first class.

OSHA

  • OSHA guidelines are reviewed throughout the semester.  E.g. proper use of ladders and their location, electrical cords and power strips, cables and thoroughfares, sprinkler access and levels of storage.

Emergency Procedures

  • Emergency procedures is posted (located by exit door) and reviewed the first week of class.

Design Lab Operational Safety Guidelines

General Information:

Initial classes held in the lab are given General Safety Procedures, to include the following categories:

Chemical and Hazardous Materials:

  • Material Safety Data Sheets: Information concerning proper use and protection of chemicals used in the Design Lab to include treatment for exposure is located centrally in the Design Lab.  Students are provided access to this file along with information for an on-line website for all MSDS. 
  • Disposal of any hazardous waste is determined when applicable.
  • Location of Fire Extinguisher locations are reviewed.

Electrical:

  • Procedures for turning off electric equipment used when leaving the lab are reviewed and assigned.

Training on hazardous Equipment:

  • Miter boards and exacto blades are safely stored in rear storage cabinets. Proper cutting methods and techniques are demonstrated by a classroom instructor during introductory classroom sessions.
  • Use of aerosol sprays and spray adhesives are not permitted in the Design lab. Students are directed to use the Scene shop loading dock or other adequately ventilated areas for aerosol spray needs.

Safety Equipment:

  • Location of safety equipment and protective gear is reviewed during “Safety Procedures” the first class.
