TAMPA — It was a day of networking, career exploration, and panel discussions introducing business students to careers in the Florida banking industry.
The University of South Florida Muma College of Business welcomed 47 banking professionals from across Florida for the Florida Bankers Association’s fall 2026 “Bank on Your Future” event, a daylong opportunity for business students to learn about the banking industry, explore career pathways, and connect with potential employers.

The Oct. 13 event brought together representatives from 12 banks, including The Bank of Tampa, Fifth Third Bank, Raymond James Bank, Regions Bank, Banesco USA, Central Bank, Community Bank, Echelon Bank, First National Bank of Pasco, Flagship Bank, ServisFirst Bank, and Waterfall Bank.
“The event provided our students with a firsthand look at the wide range of opportunities within the banking profession,” said David Blackwell, Lynn Pippenger Dean at the business college. “We are grateful for the Florida Bankers Association’s commitment to introducing our students to the many career paths available in Florida’s financial sector.”
Throughout the day, 150 general business students taking GEB 3033 listened to panel discussions. The Florida Bankers Association also hosted a student leader luncheon and a networking reception in the Muma College of Business atrium where 180 people registered to attend.

Students learned about many career paths within banking, from commercial lending and risk management to start-ups and leadership. Each insight into the financial services industry created a chance for students to discuss, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of what employers want in future talent.
The banking professionals also offered advice to students breaking into the industry. They encouraged students to utilize community and school resources. Some emphasized the importance of mentorship and finding a workplace culture that fits with their personality.
“Be inquisitive. Ask questions. Always try to learn to get better at things,” said Greg Hoerbelt, commercial banking line of business manager at Fifth Third Bank in Tampa. “But also have some patience with it as well.”
