Tammy Briant Spratling
Tammy Briant Spratling is a visiting assistant professor in the University of South Florida’s College of Education and an active member of the Tampa Bay legal community. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Stetson University College of Law, Florida State University College of Law and the University of Tampa.
Briant Spratling's research examines the intersection of law, institutional policy and student wellness in higher education, with a particular focus on graduate and professional students. Drawing on her background as an attorney, student affairs administrator and equity-focused nonprofit leader, her work explores how colleges and universities develop, interpret law and operationalize policies related to student support, behavioral intervention, basic needs and institutional responsibility. She is especially interested in how legal frameworks, both formal, such as statutory and regulatory law, and institutional, including codes of conduct, behavioral policies and housing contracts, shape students’ access to resources, sense of safety and belonging, and overall well-being. Her scholarship aims to advance ethically grounded, legally informed and equity-driven systems of student support that honor student dignity while equipping practitioners and policymakers to navigate complex legal and ethical landscapes.
Her areas of expertise include higher education law and policy, equity in higher education, civil rights, ethics, leadership and student wellness. In addition to her research and teaching, Briant Spratling supports program administration by assisting Dr. Amber Dumford with the Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration program.
Prior to joining USF, Briant served as assistant dean for student affairs at Stetson University College of Law, where she provided leadership for student affairs, residential life and mental health teams. She also served as deputy Title IX coordinator and chair of the law school’s Behavioral Intervention Team. She has served as an adjunct faculty member at Stetson University College of Law, Florida State University College of Law and the University of Tampa. Earlier in her career, she worked as an assistant state attorney in the Child Welfare Division of the Sixth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.
