Lyman L. Dukes III, Ph.D.

Lyman L. Dukes III, Ph.D., is a professor and program coordinator in exceptional student education whose research focuses on college access, success and support for students with disabilities through inclusive practices and universal design for learning.

Dukes earned a B.S. and M.A. from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. He is a professor and the masters program coordinator for the Exceptional Student Education program at the University of South Florida (USF). With 30 years of experience in education, he has held various academic and administrative roles in higher education.

Dukes has published extensively on topics related to secondary and postsecondary education for students with disabilities, including several books focused on college access and success. He has secured local, state, and federal grant funding to support research, program development and doctoral student training in exceptional student education.

His current research focuses on the shift from school to college for students with disabilities, universal design for learning in postsecondary education, research guidelines for postsecondary education and disability and standards for higher education services for students with disabilities.

    Higher Education and Disability (July 2021)
  • Outstanding Research Award from the College of Education in the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus (2017-2018)
  • Outstanding Service Award from the Division on Career Development and Transition (2015)
