Tony Tan, Ed.D.
Tony Tan, Ed.D., is a researcher and educator specializing in childhood trauma, adoption and the psychological development of immigrant and internationally adopted youth.
Tan earned his Ed.D. in Human Development and Psychology in 2004 from Harvard Graduate School of Education, focusing his doctoral training on childhood trauma, risk and resilience. His research is informed by developmental and cultural theories on human development. Since graduate school, his work has examined the long-term development of children adopted from China who are growing up in the US and Canada. He uses large-scale, multi-phase and multi-informant methods to collect longitudinal data on adoptees’ social-behavioral adjustment from adoptive parents, teachers and the adoptees themselves. In recent years, Tan has expanded his research to include studies of early adversity, China-to-US immigrant youth, and the mental health and academic functioning of Chinese children.
Tan has served on numerous dissertation committees and enjoys mentoring motivated Ph.D. students interested in adoption, immigration, mental health, psychological trauma and academic functioning. He is currently accepting Ph.D. students.
