Fourth graders compete in economics challenge at USF

Fourth graders from Hillsborough County Public Schools put their economic knowledge to the test during the annual Economic Team competition hosted by the Gus A. Stavros Center for Free Enterprise and Economic Education at the University of South Florida’s College of Education.

The competition brought together the top 12 elementary school teams in the county after they advanced through preliminary rounds earlier this year. The event featured three rounds of competition focused on economic principals, financial literacy, teamwork and real-world problem solving.

Each school was represented by a team of students eager to showcase what they had learned throughout the year. Throughout the competition, students worked together to answer questions and solve economic challenges. The event also gave many students an opportunity to visit the USF campus and experience a university setting firsthand.

The E-Team program encourages elementary students to build a strong foundation in economics while developing collaboration, communication, and critical-thinking skills in a fun and engaging environment.

"This event is important because all our students need to grow up to be financially savvy, especially nowadays when they don't often see physical money." said Marie Rogers, K-6 social studies supervisor for Hillsborough County Public Schools.

“The E-Team competition is more than just a contest; it is an engaging educational experience that helps students better understand economics and financial literacy,” said Pete Trakas, director of the Stavros Center. “We are proud to partner with Hillsborough County Public Schools to continue providing these opportunities for students.”

Located within the USF College of Education, the Stavros Center remains committed to supporting innovative economic and financial education programs for students and teachers throughout the Tampa Bay region. Learn more
