Description of the Talk

Mathematics implicates motions and machines; computations and colorings; the strings and arrows of life. Perhaps the most poetic expression of the beauty and power of Mathematics is revealed in the quantification and qualification of that which is not there: holes. Topology — the mathematics of holes — will be surveyed with a literary look at the many ways in which topology is used in data, networks, and optimization.

Robert Ghrist

Prof. Ghrist has a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University [1995] and has held tenured positions at Georgia Tech, University of Illinois, and University of Pennsylvania. He is an award-winning researcher and teacher whose Calculus: Single Variable MOOC at Coursera has been viewed by over 100,000 learners.
