BIO
Larry Svabek is an Assistant Professor of American Politics and Political Theory at the University of South Florida. His research examines questions of political economy and racial difference in the history of American political thought. By returning to past historical moments and thinkers, Larry’s research offers new perspectives on the challenges of establishing interracial democracy. His current book project, Black Cooperative Democracy: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Making of an Anti-Capitalist Tradition, recovers the politics of the Black cooperative movement in the early twentieth century to advance a critique of capitalist political economy generated by the collision of Black liberalism with European social democratic traditions. Larry’s work has been published in American Political Thought, Political Theory, and the American Historical Review. His teaching across political theory and American politics emphasizes that theoretical inquiry can serve as the basis for a wide range of methodological projects in the social sciences. Before USF, Larry worked as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago and as a Postdoctoral Fellow in American Political Thought at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
