D/F Policy

Effective Fall 2018, the Division of Health Professions Advising; Department of Chemistry; Department of Molecular Biosciences; and Department of Integrative Biology have implemented revisions to the existing D/F grade policy.

Effective Fall 2022: Department of Physics* and all other Departments and Divisions continued from Fall 2018 will be subject to the D/F policy.

These updates are aimed at better addressing degree progression and student success factors, including timely graduation and lower student indebtedness, as well as helping to ensure students are building a strong foundational knowledge in the sciences necessary for graduate school, professional school, or entering in to the workforce.

How Does this Update Impact Me?

If you started at USF for the first time in Fall 2018 or later:

  • Upon earning 3 D and/or F grades in the above USF coursework you will be required to change your major

If you are a continuing USF students who entered USF prior to Fall 2018 and who has not earned any D or F grades in the above USF coursework by the beginning of Fall 2018:

  • Upon earning 3 D and/or F grades in the above USF coursework you will be required to change your major.

If you are a continuing USF students who entered USF prior to Fall 2018 and who has earned any number of D or F grades in the above USF coursework prior to Fall 2018, but were not redirected under the old D/F Policy:

  • All D or F grades earned prior to Fall 2018 will be counted as one. Upon earning 2 additional D or F grades in subsequent terms (including Fall 2018) you will be required to change your major.

I was Redirected Based on the Previous D/F Policy. What Does this Mean for Me?

Any continuing student who was previously required to select a different major based on old versions of this policy will continue to be excluded from courses and majors offered by the Department of Chemistry, Department of Molecular Biosciences (previously Department of Cell, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology), Department of Integrative Biology, and Department of Physics at USF.

What Happens if I Earn 3 D or F Grades in the Tracked Courses?

  • If you earn 3 D or F grades in the tracked courses you will be required to change your major to one that is not conferred by the Department of Chemistry, Department of Integrative Biology, Department of Molecular Biosciences, or Department of Physics at USF.
  • Once redirected, you will no longer be able to take courses offered by the departments listed above at USF.
  • Students are able to continue in a major and/or register in courses offered by the Department of Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of GeoSciences.

Will Grade Forgiveness Prevent Me from Being Redirected from my Major?

As Grade Forgiveness does not remove a grade from a transcript, this process will NOT remove a D or F grade from being tracked for the D/F Policy.

Can I Appeal Being Required to Change my Major?

  • Yes, there is an appeals process. However, to be eligible for an appeal to the D/F Policy, you must be able to complete one of the majors offered by the Department of Chemistry, Department of Integrative Biology, Department of Molecular Biosciences, or Department of Physics in fewer credit hours than required to complete any other major offered at USF.
