Registration

Permits

Permits are manually entered permissions that allow students to register for coursework.

Permits may be required to monitor enrollment in courses as well as to assist students with any registration errors they may be facing.

Science majors will usually require a permit at least once in their academic career at USF. Please us the below information to navigate this process.

When requesting a permit, please allow 3-5 business days for a response. If you have not received a response in 5 business days, please reach out to the advising department that offers the course to follow-up. Do not resubmit your request unless encouraged to do so by the advising office. **Keep in mind, weekends and holidays are not considered business days.**

Biology Permits (Tampa Campus Only)

Biology permits for Tampa campus classes are requested through the BioAdvise Permits Page.

The biology permits page goes live a week before registration begins and it remains open until Add/Drop week has passed.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • All selected topics courses (BSC 4933) require a permit to register.
  • Some of our Biology courses require a permit in order to monitor enrollment of that course.
  • Some courses are restricted to specific majors at the start of registration to give priority to students who need the courses to meet graduation requirements. These restrictions are always noted on the BioAdvise Permits Page.
  • Biology Majors should review the Major Electives Page to review if there are any known errors that require a permit that they should be aware of prior to enrollment.
  • The Biology departments strictly enforce pre-requisites for ALL biology courses.
    • If you are taking a pre-requisite course elsewhere, you must provide documentation of your FINAL grade in this course before a permit will be granted.
    • This documentation must include your Full Name, the course code, the course title, and the final grade.

Chemistry Permits (Tampa Campus Only)

Chemistry permits for Tampa campus classes are requested through the ChemAdvise Permits Page.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • The Department of Chemistry strictly enforces pre-requisites for ALL chemistry courses. If you have met the pre-requisites for a chemistry course but receive an error message when registering, you may need a permit in order to register for the class.
  • If you are taking a pre-requisite course elsewhere, you must provide documentation of your FINAL grade in this course before a permit will be granted. For example, if you are taking CHM 2210 at HCC in the summer, you must provide proof of your final grade in that course before being given a permit for CHM 2211 for fall.
    • DO NOT depend on the official transcripts submitted to admissions, since they may not be processed fast enough to enable your immediate registration.
  • If your DegreeWorks audit does not reflect your pre-requisite coursework, you must provide proof of your pre-reqs by also attaching a PDF or screenshot of your unofficial transcript or official grade report to the permit request. If necessary, please have your scanned documentation ready before submitting the permit request form.
  • Detailed information regarding all pre-requisites for the Chemistry Department can be located on the Chemistry Pre-Requisite List [link].

Geosciences Permits (Tampa Campus Only)

Geosciences permits for Tampa campus classes are requested through the School of Geosciences Permits Page.

If the course you are requesting a permit for is not listed on this page, please email GeoAdvise@usf.edu directly to request a permit. Make sure to include your U#, the course code, course name, and semester you plan to take the course in your email.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • The School of Geosciences strictly enforces pre-requisites for ALL geo courses. If you have met the pre-requisites for a geo course but receive an error message when registering, you may need a permit in order to register for the class.
  • EVR 4940 and EVR 4921 require that students are in their final 3 semesters at USF. Students should not submit a permit for these courses unless they are eligible.

Math Permits (Tampa Campus Only)

Math permits for Tampa campus classes are requested through the MathAdvise Permits Page.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • The Math Department strictly enforces pre-requisites for ALL math courses. If you have met the pre-requisites for a math course but receive an error message when registering, you may need a permit in order to register for the class.
  • Students must earn a C or better in a math pre-requisite in order to move forward into the next math course. C- grades do not meet this requirement.

Physics Permits (Tampa Campus Only)

Physics permits for Tampa campus classes are requested through the PhysicsAdvise Permits Page.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • There are different kinds of physics courses. Please make sure you are registering for the appropriate physics course based on your completed pre-requisites.
    • PHY 2053/L and PHY 2054/L - Non-Calculus based Physics
    • PHY 2048/L and PHY 2049/L - Calculus based Physics
    • PHY 2060+PHY 2048L and PHY 2061+PHY 2049L - Enhanced Physics
  • The corresponding Physics lecture and lab must be added at the same time to avoid a registration error. For example PHY 2053 and PHY 2053L must be added together. Students cannot mix and match physics lectures and labs.
    • If you already have credit for lecture or lab, you should be able to register for the corresponding lecture or lab without needing a permit.
  • Physics permits cannot override closed sections. If a course is closed, students will need to monitor the class search to find an open seat.
  • The Physics department strictly enforces pre-requisites for ALL physics courses.
    • If you are taking a pre-requisite course elsewhere, you must provide documentation of your FINAL grade in this course before a permit will be granted.
    • This documentation must include your Full Name, the course code, the course title, and the final grade.

If you have any questions regarding a permit submitted to the St. Pete campus advisors, please email them directly at stp-advising@usf.edu

Other Permits

Consent of Instructor

Certain courses require permission from the instructor in order to enroll.

Students should meet with or reach out to the professor that teaches the course in order to discuss their registration and request a Consent of Instructor permit.

If approved by your professor, Consent of Instructor permits will be issued by the department.

Time Conflict

The USF system will not allow students to register for two courses whose times overlap.

You may request to have this issued overridden by requesting a time conflict through the College Office; however, it is important to note that time conflicts are approved only in very rare circumstances.

You can find the instructions for requesting a Time Conflict  on the College of Arts and Sciences Forms website.

Overload Requests

Students are allowed to take a maximum of 18 credit hours per semester in the fall & spring and 14 credit hours in the summer.

Taking more than the max hours in a semester is not always in the student's best interest, so it is important to fully explain why taking more than 18 or 14 hours in a semester will benefit you and your academic career.

Please keep in mind, your academic record will be reviewed when processing this request to determine your eligibility.

You can find the Overload Request Form on the College of Arts and Sciences Forms website.
