Three Tampa Bay teachers were surprised with funding to bring new projects and learning experiences to life in their classrooms. As part of the University of South Florida’s Extra Yard for Teachers celebration, the College of Education asked the community to nominate teachers that should be honored.  

The response was overwhelming, with more than 200 nominations pouring in from across Tampa Bay, highlighting the many ways local educators are making a difference. 

Extra Yard for Teachers is a national initiative that began in 2014 that helps recognize and support teachers at the local level. With funding from the College Football Playoff Foundation, USF Athletics and the college were able to surprise three teachers with a big check delivery to fund classroom projects through DonorChoose.org. Due to the high volume of nominations the college received, the College Football Playoff Foundation was able to extend an additional $1K to a third teacher. 

The teachers were recognized as part of Big Day, a national celebration during Extra Yard for Teachers Week that shines a spotlight on educators and the difference they make in their communities. During Big Day, the USF team visited each teacher to surprise them with a “big” check.

Recipients

• Che Counce-Maida, Hillsborough County: An Access Points/ESE educator, Counce-Maida has created an inclusive, research-informed learning environment for students with autism while advocating for resources that address sensory, communication, behavioral and academic needs. Her impact extends beyond her classroom through mentoring future educators, supporting initiatives and advocating for students and families. She was also named the 2026 Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year.
• Tara McClintick, Pinellas County: As a K-5 science coach, McClintick supports students, teachers and families through science education, mentoring and schoolwide STEM initiatives. She has secured grants and resources to expand learning opportunities and contributes to professional learning, university partnerships, conferences and community engagement.
• Andrew Southwick, Pasco County: A 9-12 cybersecurity educator, Southwick is helping prepare students for the technology-driven careers of the future. His nomination highlighted his dedication to mentorship, strong relationships with students and innovative approach to technology education. Testimonials from former students also demonstrated the lasting impact he has had on their lives beyond graduation.

The USF Extra Yard celebration will continue through the USF Bulls versus Delaware State football game. During the game, the College of Education will recognize local Teacher of the Years from Tampa Bay school districts and superintendents as part of the university’s celebration of educators.

Given the number of nominations received and the varying amount of information provided in each nomination, the team did not infer qualifications, experiences or accomplishments that were not described by the nominators.
