"USF provided me with a strong foundation to begin my career. After teaching in Hillsborough
County for a year, I moved back “home” to teach in Lake County for a few years. In
2010, I moved to Northern Virginia and attended GWU for a Master’s in Curriculum &
Instruction with a Reading endorsement. I took a position as an EL Resource Teacher
for several years. Then I transitioned to an Instructional Facilitator role to coach
teachers with specialized reading programs and represent my district as a Dyslexia
Advisor. During that time I completed a Post-Master’s certificate in Educational Leadership
from GWU. I moved into an Instructional Facilitator position to support teachers of
English Learners. Currently, I serve as a Specialist with the Division of English
Learners for Loudoun County Public Schools, focusing on data analysis and legal compliance.
My husband graduated from USF with an Art History degree. He eventually completed
a career switcher certificate and became a High School History Teacher in Virginia.
He went back for his Master’s in Educational Leadership and is now an Assistant Principal
for our district.

As a first generation college student in my family, I thought most Education programs would be the same. After I began working as a teacher, I quickly realized that I was extraordinary prepared for field of education. While there were experiences I could only learn once teaching on my own, there were countless skills learned during my time at USF that continue to benefit me as my career has evolved. And though my husband has a non-traditional pathway into the field, I like to think that my USF learning has transferred to him along the way."

On the personal side, my husband—also a proud USF Bull—and I will celebrate 28 years of marriage this summer. Some of our favorite memories have been made supporting USF together as Lifetime Alumni, UClub donors, and enthusiastic supporters of Bulls athletics. These days, life keeps us traveling between Austin, Texas, and Tampa, Florida, allowing us to remain connected to both our professional pursuits and our beloved USF community. Go Bulls!

That is a photo of yours truly. It was taken in my last office before retirement. Lauren Kaplan | ‘09 M.A. in College Student Affairs
In September of 2021, I landed a position in the Office of Student Involvement at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and for three and a half years, I worked with and oversaw two large student groups: our Student Government Association and the Student Funding Board, which oversees club funding requests. In the spring of 2025, it was time to get back to my community college routes, and I have now landed in the Office of Student Life at Northern Virginia Community College on the Annandale Campus, working in Student Activities.

This cohort photo was taken in the spring of 2010 in the Marshall Student Center at the University of South Florida. At the time, our College Student Affairs program was hosting a mock interview session to help prepare us for the Placement Exchange at the annual NASPA Conference. As graduate students preparing to enter the profession, we spent countless hours refining our resumes, practicing interview questions, and learning how to present our experiences and skills to potential employers. Looking back, it was both an exciting and nerve-wracking time. We were on the cusp of beginning our careers in student affairs, and many of us were preparing to travel across the country in hopes of securing our first professional positions. What I remember most, though, is the sense of community. We were more than classmates—we were a cohort. We supported one another through classes, assistantships, late-night study sessions, and the job search process. The mock interviews were designed to prepare us professionally, but they also reminded us that we were all navigating this journey together. Sometimes a photo captures more than a moment—it captures the beginning of a profession, a community, and a lifetime of impact.

favorite memories include traveling to away football games, meeting my husband, and beginning a journey that would eventually bring us two amazing boys. From classroom teacher to instructional coach, assistant principal, and now principal, I have carried those lessons with me every step of the way. USF didn’t just prepare me for a profession—it shaped the leader, wife, mother, and educator I am today.
These photos capture a full-circle moment in my journey as an educator. Taken during my final internship at Chiles Elementary in 2006 with my supervising teacher, Mrs. Booth, it marks the beginning of a mentorship that helped shape my career. In 2022, sixteen years later, our paths crossed again, at Heritage Elementary, when she became my principal and I became her assistant principal for three years. It is a testament to the power of investing in relationships, as the people who guide us today may walk alongside us as colleagues and leaders tomorrow.
