Transition
From Family Member to Coach
As your student grows more independent, your role shifts from managing day-to-day decisions to serving as a supporter, guide, and, most of all, coach. This doesn’t mean stepping away—it means supporting differently.
This shift plays an important role in helping students build confidence, resilience, and the skills they need to succeed in college and beyond.
Becoming a coach is about guiding rather than directing. This may look like:
- Asking questions that encourage reflection and decision-making
- Helping your student identify and connect with campus resources
- Encouraging accountability and follow-through
- Maintaining open, supportive communication while giving them space to grow

Supporting Your Student Along the Way
Each stage of college brings new challenges and opportunities. The support your student needs will continue to evolve as they move from their first semester through graduation.
Encouraging involvement, staying connected through regular check-ins, and reinforcing independence can help your student build a strong foundation during their time at USF.
