BIO

Emely Matos Pichardo is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at the University of South Florida (USF). She earned her Master of Arts (MA) degree in Applied Sociology in 2022 and her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Sociology in 2020 from the University of Central Florida. Her research interests lie at the intersection of migration and health, with a particular focus on health inequities and issues of reproductive justice among marginalized communities. Her dissertation examines Latin American migrants’ transnational experiences navigating reproductive health services in the United States and in their countries of origin. In 2023, she assisted the director of the Im/migrant Well-Being Research Center in launching the interdisciplinary social sciences internship program, creating opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience within their fields. Additionally, she has served in several graduate student leadership and service roles, including the College of Arts and Sciences Academic Integrity and Grievance Committee and the Latina/e/o/x Graduate Student Organization. She also served as the Program Director and Volunteer Coordinator for NicerFL’s Tampa post, a non-profit dedicated to supporting newcomer migrants through language education and mentorship. Her work and service are grounded in a commitment to amplifying marginalized voices and advancing our understanding of ongoing reproductive health inequities.
