Dr. Elizabeth Hanks is an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department
of World Languages. She uses corpus methods to study conversation, pragmatics, and
vocabulary.
Her research has appeared in academic journals such as Applied Corpus Linguistics, Corpus Pragmatics, and Register Studies, as well as in popular science outlets such as TikTok (@lana_linguistics), the Because Language podcast, and WikiHow. She is currently leading the compilation of LANA-CASE, a 10-million-word
(1,000-hour) corpus of American English conversation collected from speakers across
the United States.
At USF, Elizabeth teaches undergraduate, MA, and PhD courses on second language acquisition,
TESL methods, and research methods.
She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University, an MA in
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Northeastern Illinois University,
and a BA in Linguistics from Brigham Young University.
