Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

The mission of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is to identify future leaders in their respective academic fields who can use their graduate studies at Stanford University, and their experiences in their cohort of Knight-Hennessy scholars, for the common good in the years during and after the program.

The ideal candidate for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is a well-rounded individual who demonstrates intellectual daring and initiative in working hard, thinking big, and taking steps to actualize their ideas. They will have a consistent record of academic excellence above and beyond the curriculum. Research experiences and publications, either in peer-reviewed academic journals, monographs, or in reputed literary magazines, are expected of candidates. Leadership activities must show clear ideals and ought to have delivered results. This is more important than holding named-positions in campus, regional, or national organizations. The ideal candidate should have concrete future plans with a clear understanding and framing of their work's broader impacts on their field and aspects of the human condition. They should be able to show why attending Stanford University will enhance these goals. Finally, candidates will be judged on connecting the dots between their motivations, habits, and virtues and to their future arc at Stanford and beyond.

As part of the Knight-Hennessy application, you will be required to watch this video of Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address. Please watch the video before beginning work on the USF pre-application form.

For Applicants to Stanford-Medical School Programs:

Stanford Medicine is uniquely structured in comparison to other medical and health programs in the United States. First, Public Health is part of Stanford Medicine, as Stanford University does not have a separate college of public health. Second, a spectrum of dual-degree programs with Law, Sociology, Business, and MD/PHD, MD/MS, and MD/MPH degrees are administered through Stanford Medicine. Third, research is an integral component of any degree program at Stanford Medicine. Please read this article before beginning. Thus, along with all the other criteria of an ideal candidate for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program (above), the ideal Knight-Hennessy Stanford Medicine applicant will also have a strong research background in their application, will have past-research experiences, and will ideally pursue a dual-degree program described at http://med.stanford.edu/education/dual-degree-programs.html.

  • Medical School applications proceed on a rolling-basis. It is the applicant’s responsibility to attend to deadlines for rolling admissions at Stanford Medicine and thus, to the associated MCAT timelines to be able to meet the Knight-Hennessy application deadline in early October.
  • At the time of the application to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program, all candidates must have already passed the second round of evaluations of their medical school applications at Stanford Medicine favorably. The Knight-Hennessy program does not place candidates in the post-graduate programs they seek.
