Prestigious Awards for Graduate Study in the United Kingdom Declaration of Intent

We invite students to complete the Declaration of Intent to participate in the campus competition for endorsement. Selected candidates will compete nationally for prestigious awards which fund graduate studies in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

This Declaration of Intent covers four awards: The Marshall Scholarship (UK), The George J. Mitchell Scholarship (Ireland), the Rhodes Scholarship (University of Oxford), and the Gates Cambridge Scholarship (University of Cambridge).

Who should consider completing the declaration form?
Rising seniors (graduating fall 2022 or spring 2023)

What happens next?
Promising candidates will be invited to campus interviews in early May (dates TBD). The prestigious awards selection committee will choose candidates for USF endorsement to compete nationally.

ONS advisers will then work with the selected students over summer to prepare them for the national competition.

What do we look for in potential candidates?
We select based on demonstrated track-record in all of the following categories:

  • Academic excellence (evidenced in academic performance, research experiences, publications, presentations, and past—campus, regional, and national— recognitions of academic merit) - Minimum 3.8 GPA

  • Leadership and enterprising work where the candidate has, or had, a real and measurable impact on a problem, a social issue, or played a role in civic advocacy

  • Commitment to the common good and the ability to show how that connects with their post graduate study and post-scholarship plans

Additionally, for the Marshall and Mitchell Scholarships, we look for signs that the applicant can be an ambassador for cultures and values of the United States in their areas of work and that they have the potential to foster ties between the USA and UK/Republic of Ireland, during and after the scholarship.

What areas of study are eligible?
All, except medicine and MBAs.

Please submit the Declaration of Intent Form and a CV/Resume of activities to onsnominations@usf.edu by April 18, 2022 at 11:59pm EST.
