AREA OF CONCENTRATION #1: INEQUALITIES AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences offers an optional area of concentration in “Inequalities and Social Justice” for sociology majors. Courses included in this concentration focus on social inequalities and the strategies that could be used to address them. This concentration will be listed on your official transcript and can be useful as you market your skills to potential employers after graduation. Students choosing to complete this concentration will take one required course (Inequalities and Social Justice—SYO 4536) and three elective courses (all with a grade of C- or higher) listed below.

NOTE: Additional courses that fulfill the 9 hour elective requirement may be added to this list each semester so be sure to contact your advisor for an updated list.

Required Course (3 hours): Inequalities and Social Justice (SYO 4536)

This course is offered once each academic year and has a cap of 29 students. It will contain either a substantial service learning component or a substantial original research component (the instructor will choose which to pursue).

Concentration Electives (9 hours) 

AREA OF CONCENTRATION #2: IDENTITY AND COMMUNITY

The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences offers an optional area of concentration in “Identity and Community” for sociology majors. Courses included in this concentration focus on the changing relationships among individuals and their communities in light of technological advances, globalization, environmental crises, political developments, and social problems. This concentration will be listed on your official transcript and can be useful as you market your skills to potential employers after graduation. Students choosing to complete this concentration will take one required course (Identity and Community—SYP 4111) and three elective courses (all with a grade of C- or higher) listed below.
