USF Applications

The following technologies are supported by USF and can be used to enhance the development and delivery of your course content (click the links for more information):

  • Canvas: Learn how to get started using this learning management software (LMS) to hold material and documents for your classes – even your face-to-face classes!

  • Proctorio: This tool for online proctoring allows faculty to monitor student activity while taking online tests.
  • Blackboard Collaborate & Big Blue Button: A comparison of two web conferencing tools (integrated into Canvas) that can be used to host synchronous interactive sessions with students similar to Elluminate. Both offer the option to record the session for later viewing.
  • Respondus: Create quizzes that can be imported and deployed in Canvas.
  • Panopto: This free software to record lectures or screen-capture videos (and/or webcam feed) is included in Canvas and can be deployed in the Modules section as an External Tool.

  • eXplorance Blue Student Evaluations: This software enables students to fill out an end of semester evaluations (the links appear in MyUSF for the students). Faculty is encouraged to download their eXplorance PDFs after each semester, as they are not kept by the system: http://Blueprod.forest.usf.edu/Blue – click on Dashboard (left side) then View Report (right side) for the PDFs. These include helpful comparisons to department and college averages. Or, for archive material of previous semesters, see https://fair.usf.edu/EvaluationMart (only gives info on YOUR evals, not department or college averages) – do "assessment search by instructor" field in the middle.

  • Turnitin: Software bundled into Canvas to detect and prevent plagiarism.
  • Lynda.com:These free video tutorials show students (or faculty) how to navigate through hundreds of software applications and specific software tasks. Sign in through the organization portal using your USF NetID and password. Rather than build lengthy how-to guides for your classes, refer students to Lynda.com

     

  • Attendance Codes: Also called WebCodes, this is an internally-built tool that lets instructors generate a day-specific (and class section-specific) numerical code, give it to students, and they log in to the same location in MyUSF to enter the code as proof of their attendance in the lecture. Both instructor and students find "Attendance Codes" under "Teaching and Learning Tools." A report can be generated, ready to import into Canvas. To avoid extraneous columns in the Canvas grade book and/or extra clicks after the import process, we suggest you delete the many columns of "individual day" results in the .csv file before you upload it to Canvas. This is tricky because highlighting the cells and clicking DELETE will only delete the contents of the cells, not the cells themselves, which Canvas will still register. Instead, you need to highlight those COLUMNS in Excel and right-click to "delete columns."
  • Software Center: formerly known as "Run Advertised Programs," this service offers programs available for all USF faculty and staff to install without cost. The list includes MS-Office, SPSS, Acrobat Pro, ArcGIS, Endnote, Visio, and others. It is not visible in the Control Panel. Instead, click the windows icon on your desktop PC and type "Software Center" in the search bar (note: it is not the Apple version of software center, in case that also shows up).

  • Deployable Apps: These programs are available for use by USF students and faculty, but are not fully installed on your computer. Rather, they "deploy" temporarily upon demand and disappear afterward. Begin by visiting http://apps.usf.edu. Programs include ArcGIS, Adobe Captivate, and several others also available in the Software Center.

  • Handbook on USF Technology from IT: The Information Technology office from USF maintains this annual publication of "how to" tutorials using everything from NetID passwords to classroom technology.

 

Classroom Technology

  • The Educational Technologies website (http://usfweb2.usf.edu/cts/) is home to information and materials regarding supported technologies.
  • Most classrooms on campus are equipped with document cameras. Check out our 10 Ways to Use Document Cameras Handout to enhance students' learning in class.
  • Should you have a technology problem in a classroom, please contact the Classroom Support Helpline at (813) 974-2382 (or you can use the Help button on the LCD Control Panel, located on the Teaching Station). If they aren't able to assist you over the phone, a technician will be deployed to your classroom right away. Hours are as follows:
    • Monday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
    • Fridays: 7:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
    • Saturdays: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Tech Camp

Tech Camp is an informal drop-by atmosphere of seeing technologies for teaching demonstrated. Each technology is shown in an academic context, but the "how to" is left for the comprehensive Technologies for Teaching booklet (or follow-up consultations with ATLE on an individual basis, as desired). We focus on showing "what is possible" in these 15-minute parlor sessions. Feel free to come to as many (or as few) sessions as you would like!

Open Educational Resources

Faculty is increasingly encouraged to select textbook options (and textbook alternatives) that are cheaper for students, or completely free. The USF library offers several ideas to replace books (including e-books and library course reserves), and you may also wish to view our handout on Open Educational Resources (OER) that can be used to supplement or even replace textbooks.
