First Year Composition

MISSION:

Hosted by the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, the mission of USF First-Year Composition is to structure opportunity to learn for diverse entering students. Courses are designed in a construct-driven, language arts model of writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Using state-of-the-art research, our programmatic approach to teaching and assessment leads to continuous curricular improvement.

VISION:

Holding the Writing Program Certificate of Excellence awarded by the Conference on College Composition and Communication, USF First-Year Composition aspires to maintain its national recognition as a center of instructional excellence. We aim to create a collegial and transparent learning environment in which our curricular innovations—especially our use of empirical research in writing analytics—inform curricular design and advance opportunity to learn for diverse student populations both nationally and internationally.

VALUES:

Members of USF First-Year Composition hold and foster these values. We work to demonstrate these values in all we say and do:

  • Collaboration and transparency
  • Language arts construct modeling
  • Justice and fairness
