Jerome Galea examines integration of traditional medicine in Peru’s public health system

Jerome Galea, PhD, LCSW, associate professor in the School of Social Work, recently visited members of the Shawi Tribe in Peru’s Amazon jungle to evaluate the implementation of health policies that aim to integrate traditional health beliefs into government-provided health services.

During the visit, Galea and his colleagues learned how the public health system, in response to high maternal mortality rates in the Peruvian jungle, has incorporated vertical birthing practices into its maternal health services.
