Dr. Passaglia Tackles Glaucoma with Novel Technology
Dr. Passaglia and his lab published two papers related to intraocular pressure: "Characterization of intraocular pressure variability in conscious rats" and "Simulation of gravity- and pump-driven perfusion techniques for measuring outflow facility of ex vivo and in vivo eyes."

USF Faculty Members Present Research at ASEE 2022
Nearly a dozen USF College of Engineering faculty members presented research at the 129th American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota held June 26 to June 29. Each year, nearly 4000 educators, exhibitors, and presenters gather and collaborate at ASEE's annual conference to share best practices on improving the way the next generation of engineers is taught.

Combining Engineering And Medicine To Help Others
The Biomedical Sciences bachelor’s degree that Youssef Mohamed received from the University of South Florida in 2017, at age 18, is often considered a gateway degree to advanced study or work in health-related fields, such as medicine or dentistry. Mohamed added a new dimension to his pursuit of a Doctor of Medicine degree at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine by adding the goal of a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, which he studied as a minor field in his undergraduate work.

Just three months after attending their graduation commencement ceremony together, USF Department of Medical Engineering alums Abby Blocker, Carolyna Yamamoto Alves Pinto and Jacob Yarinsky learned their submission for a national student design competition — a device capable of ventilating two people attached to the same ventilator — had won first prize.

Christopher Passaglia Receives NIH Grant Optic Nerve Research
Department of Medical Engineering Professor Chris Passaglia was recently sub-awarded a $282,335 R01 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences within the National Institutes of Health to examine the effectiveness of different drug cocktails at promoting axon regeneration in the crushed rat optic nerve.

NIH Grant Funds New Optical Biosensor Technology
The two-year National Institutes of Health project researches how near-infrared light propagation and optical analysis can be used to measure blood flow in the brain. Investigators are Ashwin Parthasarathy, assistant professor in the University of South Florida Department of Electrical Engineering and Ann Eddins, professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders and co-director of that department’s Auditory & Speech Sciences Laboratory.

Astronaut Gives Tips For Living On Earth Or In Space
Besides Tesla coils, electric cars and loud demonstrations of chemical combustion, highlights of annual USF Engineering Expos include presentations from notable STEM professionals, such as this year’s guest speaker, astronaut Franklin “Story” Musgrave, Ph.D., who flew aboard six space shuttle missions. In his case, adding an A to change the acronym to STEAM, is appropriate.
