Academic Advising

Transfer Student

Please follow these steps to ensure a smooth entry into USF and the Department of Psychology

Before Admission into USF

It is recommended, but not required, that a student has completed an AA degree at Florida public state or community college prior to admission at USF. If you are an out of state student, your courses will be reviewed and applied to the specific categories within the curriculum. It is recommended that a student complete the following courses (if possible) for a smooth transition into USF:

  • PSY 2012 Intro to Psych/General Psychology course (C or higher); AP score of 3 or higher in Psych would also complete this requirement (send score from CollegeBoard to USF Admissions)

  • A College Level Statistics course (STA prefix course) (C or higher); AP score of 3 or higher in Statistics would also complete this requirement (send score from CollegeBoard to USF Admissions)

  • Biology course (BSC prefix course) (C or higher); AP score of 3 or higher in Biology would also complete this requirement (send score from CollegeBoard to USF Admissions)

  • Foreign Language Level 1 and 2 of the same language (C or higher)
If any of the above courses cannot be completed prior to Admission into USF, you will be required to complete them at USF as part of your Bachelors of Arts degree requirements.

Applying to USF

The Psychology program at USF is not a special access program. Students will need to meet the requirements set forth by the USF Admissions office. View more information on transfer student admission requirements.

If you meet the admissions requirements and receive a letter of acceptance from Admissions, you will be eligible to declare a major in Psychology. The undergraduate program at USF is a Bachelors of Arts degree only. The Psychology major is primarily on-campus coursework. There are limited online courses available within the major after the completion of PSY 3213 Research Methods in Psychology. This major cannot be completed 100% online.

After Receiving Acceptance from USF Admissions

  1. Register for Orientation
Orientation is mandatory for all newly admitted USF students, including transfer students. You must register for an on-campus Orientation on the Orientation website. If you do not intend to come to USF Tampa campus, please go to either St. Petersburg campus or Sarasota-Manatee campus, as Orientation requirements can differ from one another.

  2. Register for classes
    • Students who meet with their academic advisor prior to attending orientation will have the opportunity to register before attending orientation. We highly recommend that you take advantage of this! The Psychology department offers in-person pre-orientation group sessions. Students are notified via email about available dates and how to RSVP. Students can also try to schedule an advising appointment to complete pre-orientation advising. To schedule an advising appointment, please visit this link. USF Orientation is STILL mandatory for all pre-advised students.

    • If you do not meet with your advisor in advance, you can begin registering for classes at the end of orientation. There will be Orientation Transition Mentors (TMs) in a computer lab who can assist you with the registration process.
