Rhetoric & Composition (English MA, PhD)
The University of South Florida Department of English offers an MA and PhD in English with a concentration in rhetoric and composition and a graduate certificate in Professional and Technical Communication (PTC). Our programs are designed to produce teacher-scholars who have solid, foundational knowledge of critical theory, PTC theory and practice, and composition pedagogy, as well as a specialized knowledge in their field of concentration.
Our programs allow students the flexibility to grow into their own professional and scholarly identities through mentoring, opportunities for interdisciplinary coursework, and faculty with broad interests and knowledge. We have an excellent placement evidenced by the success of our alumni.
Our primary programmatic research strengths are:
- Rhetoric of science, technology, and medicine
- Technical and professional communication
- Research methodologies
These strengths are buttressed by faculty research areas, which encompass more specific areas, such as:
- Data analytics
- Feminist theory
- New materialist theory
- Public memory
- Space and place
Faculty are committed to professionalization through collaborative writing partnerships with graduate students; internships; variety of teaching opportunities; editorial work through the hosting of the journal of Rhetoric of Health and Medicine and the Foundations in TPC book series; and diverse opportunities to learn different facets of program administration in both first-year writing and professional and technical communication.
